Artlink is very proud to launch the current project Resistance and Rebellion on Saturday 28th September at the Saldanha Galleries at Fort Dunree. With it’s expansive views and rich military history Fort Dunree is the inspiration for this site specific project which has been in development with the artists over the past 18 months.
Acomplished Irish Artists; Christine Mackey, John Beattie and Conor McFeely were invited to engage with Fort Dunree as a location and to develop work in response to the themes prompted by the site, Resistance and Rebellion.
Weathermen by Conor McFeely sees the artist develop a site-specific enivironment of found objects and new media installations, designed to conduct complex investigations into individual perception, themes and acts of subversion, and reaction to sudden dramatic change. The development of the Weathermen project on this site engages directly with it exposed headland position, its military history, and its richness in significant transformations.
Fortifying Beds (phase 1) sees the artist Christine Mackey present work based upon the gathering and propagation of seeds, collecting 60 plants, from the immediate area around the Fort Dunree headland site, and the development of a set of provocative, ambitious plans for a Phase 2 of the project. This Phase 2 will develop, with the provision of additional support in spring 2014, an outdoor garden space that will act as a unique ‘plein-air’ artist’s studio or ‘studio without walls’ to be facilitated by Artlink, which will initially illustrate the artist’s Phase 1 findings as a source of learning and information about the healing and strenghtening properties of the local naturally occurring resources, and be a stimulating enviornment within which over the coming years ecologically aware artists and activists will be commisioned by Artlink to develop further projects onsite.
A Line of Inquiry (phase 1: research and devlopment) sees John Beattie presenting preliminary work that explores the potential of how contemporary notions of drawing and mark-making can engage with the military domain of Fort Dunree. The project is a provocative development of the artist’s practice, for example at his previous artist residency at the Irish Museum of Modern Art Beattie developed sculptural drawing tools where the mechanics of mark making fused with indivdual acts of expression. The site-specific research by the artist into an engagement between drawing practice and the Fort Dunree context, will culminate in his concluding site-specific project exhibition at the site A Line of Inquiry - opening 16th November at Fort Dunree - to include a drawing executed employing the use of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) - colloquially known as a drone.
